Membership Status
Active - Members whose financial obligations to the DFC have been met are considered active members. This entitles them use of all DFC facilities and to participate in any DFC activities.
Inactive - Members who choose not to pay their annual dues or whose account is past due by 60 days or more are considered inactive members. Inactive members are not permitted to use the DFC facilities or participate in any DFC activities. Members may remain inactive for up to two years.
Sabbatical - If a regular member goes on sabbatical, you will need to notify the DFC of when you will leave and when you will return so that the appropriate financial arrangements can be made.
Transient - Members who have an appointment for two years or less to the University. Transients pay dues in excess of regular membership but there is no initiation fee. The membership is valid for only one year.
Changes in Employment Status
- Retirement will not change the status of your eligibility. You may continue membership, become inactive, or resign membership.
- Termination of a member's association with Duke (i.e. leave for other employment or job termination) is the basis for termination of membership to the DFC. Members leaving Duke are allowed to remain active through the current fiscal year.

Membership Cards
The DFC issues membership cards to all eligible active members that are 13 years or older. Cards are only issued to those that constitute "family" in the Eligibility section of this page. Each person is responsible for having his or her card with them while attending the DFC. You may be asked to show your card to verify membership during any visit. If your card is misplaced or stolen, the replacement fee is $5. The membership cards are renewed each year.
